Have three things clear: what question they will investigate, how they will reach the activity, and what work you will collect at the end. Once those decisions are made, you can spend the lesson observing, discussing and helping students.

This guide walks you through preparing Which pendulum swings faster?, a LabsLand Teach activity for ages 9–13 with a suggested duration of 23 minutes. Students compare the time taken for 20 complete swings of two pendulums. The activity asks for two measurements and one choice; it needs no graphs or formulas. It is a manageable example for a first session.

The public page lets you review the level, duration and proposed work before signing in with a teacher account.

1. Choose an activity with a clear outcome

Open the Teach catalogue and read a complete activity, rather than just its title. Look for a question that fits what your class knows and an outcome you can review at the end. In this example, each pair should state how long Standard and Short took, and which completed the same number of swings in less time.

The catalogue duration is a guide to the activity itself. For a first class, allow extra time to distribute devices, enter the session and explain how it works. For a 45-minute lesson, you might allow about 10 minutes for access and a demonstration, 23 for the activity, which already includes counting practice and the closing discussion, and about 12 for any difficulties. Adjust this plan after trying the steps yourself.

Read the instructor guide too. For this activity, the guide explains how to count swings, common mistakes, and what to do if a configuration is unavailable. Keep those instructions to hand: they help you decide what to simplify while retaining the lesson’s question.

2. Check the access your investigation needs

On the public page, “Try this lesson with your class” takes you to the teacher flow. Sign in with your teacher account, prepare the session, and review the access options shown for your account. Being able to read an activity does not necessarily mean you can run every observation it requires.

For the pendulum example, the comparison needs Standard and Short at 15°. The public demo allows only Standard at 15°, so it is not enough to complete the full activity. Check both configurations using the access planned for your class before telling students they will be able to measure both.

Make the check on a device and network similar to those your students will use. Confirm that the laboratory opens, the video plays without interruptions, and the stopwatch is visible while students count. A check on your own computer may not reveal a restriction on the school network.

The Pendulum laboratory uses recorded real motion. Explain this to the class: they will choose available configurations and analyse the observations, rather than release a pendulum live. Other laboratories work differently; check when you change activities.

3. Decide how students will work and how you will collect answers

With devices shared by pairs, assign one student to count and the other to operate the stopwatch. Each pair opens the laboratory from the activity and records its two times. Swapping roles when moving from Standard to Short lets both students take part in the measurement.

If you have only one computer, project the laboratory: the class can count aloud while you operate the stopwatch. Collect the two measurements and the comparison on paper or through an oral response. Describe this as a shared class observation. It can be a useful way to work even when it does not produce individual submissions in Teach.

Before the session, decide whether you will collect one response per pair or per student. Explain this before distributing devices. Sharing an observation does not mean individual explanations will be identical.

Four decisions to prepare the class. Make the question and expected work clear before sharing access.

4. Share the session and practise joining

Display your session code and the student entry page. The code shown in your session is the one the class should use; do not copy a code from a screenshot or another session.

The student entry screen. “MESA42” in the empty field is an example of the format, not your class code.

Before starting, ask one pair to read aloud the activity title they can see. This helps identify anyone who has opened the catalogue or a preview instead of the prepared session. If the school requires students to sign in, they should use their usual LabsLand account.

Give a short demonstration: reach the activity, open the laboratory, and return to the activity. Then practise counting with your hand: left end, right end, back to the left. Say “zero” at the first left-hand turning point; each complete journey there and back adds one swing. You do not need to solve the whole activity in front of the class.

5. Check one measurement before asking for both

In this example, each pair times 20 complete swings of Standard, then 20 of Short, both at 15°. Check the counting at the start: if students count both ends as swings, they will get a time roughly half the expected value. The on-screen stopwatch measures viewing time and does not start automatically with the pendulum; show students how to start timing at the agreed point.

As they work, ask “What have you kept the same?” and “When did you start counting?”. These questions help locate problems with the method without giving students the result. If a pair loses count, it can repeat that observation rather than restart the entire activity.

Ask students to return to the activity and enter each measurement as soon as they obtain it. Reserve the final few minutes to complete their submission. Ask them to check that their work is shown as submitted and whether the screen reports any missing answers. Then check from the teacher session that the expected submissions appear. Do not assume work has been submitted because someone has closed the browser.

A backup plan that keeps the question

If the video freezes, that timing is no longer reliable: the clock may keep running while the motion stops. Discard the measurement. If the problem persists or Short is unavailable, use the backup measurements in the instructor guide and collect students’ responses on paper or orally, as an analysis of provided data.

Explain where those data came from. Students can decide which of two times is shorter and discuss why the same number of swings must be counted, but should not present those figures as observations they have just made or mark laboratory use as complete when it did not take place.

Close with a short explanation

Two numbers do not tell the whole story. Ask one pair to complete this sentence: “Standard took ___ s and Short took ___ s to complete 20 swings; so, in our comparison, the pendulum that swings faster is ___.” Ask another pair to explain what they kept the same to make the comparison fair.

If the times are too close to distinguish, accept “We cannot see a clear difference” and review the method. The aim is to support a comparison with evidence, rather than adjust the data to match an expected answer.

Download the one-page preparation checklist and use it before your session. To get started, open Which pendulum swings faster?, review the activity, and prepare the access your class needs.

Prepare your first class with LabsLand Teach: choose an activity, check access, organise pairs and collect answers.
